Stop! Wait! Most people take the turn-off, which leads to Bright or back to the Hume Hwy. But do yourself a favour and travel 600m further, and then up the long driveway to a most picturesque cellar door and you will thank me forever. You may even get the chance to listen to some funky tunes from a live band while you do a tasting or have a bite to eat. Sometimes your pre-conceived ideas are so far from what is reality and thank God I got a good kick up the bum of reality from Gapsted. I thought they only produced dime a dozen over-commercialised wines. “How wrong was I!” This is a winery that not only has mass-produced wines, but it also has some unusual varieties like Barbera, a tasty Prosecco, Tempranillo and a Russian variety Saperavi. These wines aren’t just crazy out there wines, made by someone who has too much time on their hands. No, these unusual varieties are excellent wines to be proud of. The range of wines is quite astounding at Gapsted so you will find something for everyone including the more common garden varieties that everyone knows.
Each time we have visited, the staff who guide you through the tasting have been some of the most knowledgeable I have come across. They had their own opinions on each of the wines rather than the “They are all great it’s up to you,” lacklustre response. Go forth and enjoy.
