Mitchelton
If you have not been to Mitchelton in a while then you will still find that the 70’s building has not changed from the outside, but inside is a different story, where the fit out has brought this cellar door to the modern day. Cooper splash backs with rows of bottles in dark wood racks and old school filament light bulbs, that have made a comeback, soften the interior. An open fire roars to one side while tables of produce, chocolates, oils, salad dressings and anything else foodie completes the picture.
The wine list is extensive and we needed help to pick some highlights, which included an excellent value Cuvee, a wonderfully aged Marsanne and a very good Chardonnay. With the reds we tried three different Shiraz in the Mitchelton, Heathcote and the flagship Print Shiraz. All were wonderful and represented different price points but the standout was the Print Shiraz and there was no way I was going to spit any of that out into the spittoon.
There is a restaurant that faces out towards the river and the signature tower is worth the climb for the view over the surrounds.
